I am a New York sports fan. I root for all the New York teams.
And wehn I have to make a choice: the Mets, Jets, Nets, and Islanders get priority. If those teams play the Yankees, Giants, Knicks, and Rangers or Devils, I root for the fab four.

I think it had something to do with my Dad. He immigrated to New York around the time all of these teams were founded. He is a HUGE Mets fan, and I think from watching the Mets with him, I rooted for all those teams when they were in season.
My earliest memories of the Mets are Jon Matlack, my all-time favorite Met, giving up Roberto Clemente’s 3000 hit, and Willie Mays falling down in centerfield in the ‘73 series.

I have never screamed so loud as when the Mets came back to beat the BoSox in Game 6 of the ‘86 series. That train going to Flushing on Game 7 Monday was rocking as it pulled into the station.

I went to the Parade, and when then Mayor Ed Koch introduced all the politicos, a guy yelled at “Where’s Donald Manes?

My college buddy Shaft was at that parade. We struck up a 20 plus year finish after that.
That said, the Mets are killing me. Freaking killing me. I can’t even watch them now.

I know they are in the race. I know it’s a different year. It just feels the freaking same to me as it did in 2007.
The Wilpons authorized the firing of Willie on the first day of the West Coast trip. They gave Jerry the interim tag. I kept looking to see Tony Bernazard become the skipper. They overcame that mess when Carlos Delgado became so muy calor (did I remember my high school Spanish correctly?) that Reyes, Wright, and Beltran season’s have almost gone unnoticed by the national media.
Santana has done all that he can do. Pelphrey, Maine, Perez, even Pedro, have done their best as hurlers.
When I left to volunteer for football camp, the Mets were up by 1 game.
When I returned, they were up by 3.
Now, the Phils are in first. The Mets lead the wild card.
I don’t like it. It gives me shiversof last year when they blew the lead on the last weekend of the season.

And not only did they blow the lead, they blew it to teams that they were clearly superior too, like the Marlins and Nationals.
Florida is having a decent year yet the Nationals suck! The Mets are letting former teammate Lastings Milledge exact revenge on them.
And E. Dukes is hitting bombs on them, as well.

The Mets got shut out tonight against the Nats tonight. This is not good.
I can’t take it. They’ve got to finish!
Of course, there is no one to finish the games. Wild Man Wagner is out, and we don’t even have closer by committee.
If you think the Mets are not going to press, then you don’t know baseball. Baseball is the game of ultimate failure.
The final 10 days of Shea’s life is going to be very interesting.
And very nerve wracking to a whole bunch of Metropolitan fans, including this one.
