A good Monday night game brings Week 2 of the NFL Season to a close.
What was up with that call that the Eagles called on 4th down at the end of the game? Cowboys played great cover D on 3rd down to put Philly in a tough spot.
Great game. Lots of scoring, big plays on defense and specials. It was a an entertaining game. Just the type of game that Jerry Jones likes.
The Eagles did lose the game, though. Donovan’s fumble led to the game winning score. And they played like that without their two top receivers. Romo got the Eagles to stop blitzing by completing the passes to Owens early in the game. That catch before his first TD was sick!
DeSean Jackson, dude, when will you learn? Stop trying to “Usain” the touchdown by celebrating before you cross the goal-line.
ESPN just pulled a highlight of you at the US Army All-American bowl that showed you doing a similar thing in 2004.
I hope the young players at home learned something from that incident. Score, cross the goal-line, hand the ball to the official. The score is enough.
So, here are the SFP Week 2 awards:
Game of the Week: I love the history of the AFL. Chargers-Broncos this week wsa a great contest. Up and down scoring, Shanahan going for the win when he could have played safe and a tie, and the best referee in the game, Ed Hochuli, acknowledging he made a mistake.

It does not get better than that.
Team of the week: Panthers. If you told Coach John Fox that he would be 2-0 at the start of the season, after they had to suspend Steve Smith for sucker-punching Ken Lucas, then he would have you committed to the asulym.

Coach of the Week: Young boy Lane Kiffin. WIth all the stuff he went through with the loss to the Broncos last week, and the rumors that he will be fired this week, the Raiders bounced back and ran for 300 yards against a Herm Edwards coached defense. That is incredible.

Offensive Player of the Week: Matt Cassell made his first start since high school Second significant playing time in the NFL. This guy has not had this type of experience, ever! High School can not compare to the NFL, especially if its almost ten years ago. Matt is replacing the top player of the league. Matt executed the gameplan to perfection and put his team in good spots. He did not panic in the situation and I think the Pats are in good spot. I will watch his development and see how he fares week-to-week.

Offensive Rookie of the Week: 2 weeks in a row, Eddie Royal. I love this guy. Cutler went to him at the end of the game, twice. Remember, Eddie is about 5′10” and 180 lbs. He made the route in the middle of end zone, TWICE. Remember, Brandon Marshall had caught 18 passes in the game, and Jay Cutler still went to Royal.

And on the 2-pt conversion, he beat three guys!
Defensive Player of the Week: Chris Horton. Washington football Club. Horton, a 7th round selection in the past draft from UCLA, and an emergency starter in this game, pulled the hat trick with a fumble and 2 interceptions, and against his hometown team in the Saints. All three turnovers were significant, as the first two led to points, and the the last one snuffed out New Orlean’s last drive preserving Jim Zorn’s first win. Hopefully, this game removes the taste of Horton’s alma mater getting routed by BYU 56-0 the day before in Provo.

Defensive Rookie of the Week: see above.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Joe Nedney made 4 out of 5 field goals, including the game winner in OT,to lead the visiting 49ers victory over Seattle. Nedney missed an attempt at the end of regulation, yet came back and helped his team win.

Best 2-0 teams:
Patriots — Maybe it is the system.
Panthers – Smith returning this week.
Cowboys–Won division game in toughest division in football. Tony’s teammates pick him up to protect Jessica’s comments about kicking Eagle butt on Good Morning America.
Giants–See? Eli looks so confident. Three-headed monster at RB. And don’t forget about Justin Tuck.
Broncos–Say what you want about the refs, they still made the plays at the end of the game.
Bills– Surprise team here. Have played well in all three phases of the game to get off to this great start. Nice catch by Hardy to get the win versus the Jags.
Best 0-2 teams
Chargers– defense can’t stop anybody a the end of the game, though they do get a pass for the Mulligan at Mile High. Did you see Sproles though?

Jaguars–Offense needs to put up more points. Defense played well enough not to get off to this start.
Non-NFL Week 2 item: Damn, the Astros nearly got no-hit twice back-to-back, and only got 1 hit total in the two games against the Cubs at Wrigley Field North, otherwise known as Miller Park. Their minds are really back in Houston with the devastation from Ike. So much for the neutral site.
