Ty Willingham will be fired.

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments

University of Washington head football Ty Willingham will be fired this season.

And he won’t say this but I will: the officials at today’s game against BYU cost him his gig.

With :02 seconds to go, Husky quarterback Jake Lockar scored on a quarterback draw to bring his team within one point of tying the Cougars. All of sudden he was flagged for excessive celebration.

Here is what the NCAA rule on excessive celebration reads:

Rule 9-2, Article 1(a)(1)(d) prohibits “Any delayed, excessive, prolonged or choreographed act by which a player (or players) attempts to focus attention upon himself (or themselves)”; in addition, Rule 9-2, Article 1(a)(2) asserts that “After a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot

Here is what Lockar did:

Do you think that activity warranted a penalty? Does that penalty fit the intent or letter of the NCAA rule?

The penalty backed up the Huskies to kick a 35 year PAT.

You know what happened next.

BYU blocked the kick and held on for victory.

Credit to th Cougs, Bronco’s boys got there and made the play. All credit to them.

And if the kick was blocked from the normal PAT spot we are not even having this discussion.

I guess the referees from this game will be suspended for a few contests.

Can you believe that these refs were from the Pac-10? These were the Huskies conference refs, and the game was at Husky Stadium.

I wonder if they will apologize to Coach Willingham.

Oklahoma comes to Seattle next week. The Sooners will be heavily favored over Ty’s young Sled Dogs.

It’s too bad after this season he won’t see them grow up.
